For homeowners currently registered by a licensed ecoENERGY advisor, Natural Resources Canada ecoEnergy Retrofit Grants and Incentives and the Home Energy Ontario Program provide homeowners with financial grants to subsidize the cost of energy-saving home improvements including insulation. Registration for the federal program administered by Natural Resources Canada ended March 31, 2010 but Ontario homeowners can still register for up to $5000 in grants through the Ministry of Energy.

Here's how the process works:

1. The homeowner selects a licensed energy evaluator to register their home, and to conduct a thorough assessment of their home's energy use.  We can assist you in contacting an energy evaluator.

2. The evaluator inspects the home and provides a written report to the homeowner on ways to save energy as well as a guide to grants for improvements such as having attic insulation blown in. The evaluator submits the report.

3. Ontario, on receiving notification that a qualifying audit has been completed, reimburses the homeowner 50 per cent of the cost of this first audit (up to $150).

4. The homeowner has until March 31, 2011 to work on the recommendations and have a verification audit completed.

5. By March 31, 2011, the evaluator completes all grant paperwork and submits it on behalf of the homeowner. The maximum grant is $5,000 per home from the Province of Ontario, and (for those homeowners who were registered by March 31, 2009) $5,000 from Natural Resources Canada for a total of $10,000.

If you have questions please feel free to call the Ontario Ministry of Energy at 1-888-668-4636, or contact us or click to view the Frequently Asked Questions page.
